A late 18th century English verge with a very unusual painted enamel dial, and fine quality movement, in gilt pair cases. All in good condition

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock with a portrait engraved at the neck. Four round pillars, diamond endstone, silver regulator disk and blued screws.
Signed “Robt.Bunyan, LINCOLN” and numbered “901”. In very good condition and running well.

DIAL : Very unusual painted white enamel, in very good condition. Just a few light scratches and a small short hairline just above the hands. Matching blued steel hands which appear to be original.

INNER CASE : Gilded brass, with maker’s mark IN.

In very good condition, with just a little damage to one sleeve of the hinge. However the bezel snaps shut correctly, and the high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine. A little wear to the gilding, mainly around the band and to the bow and stem.

OUTER CASE : Gilded brass with matching makers’s mark to the inner.

All in very good condition. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. The catch button has a small dent. Just a little wear to the gilding on some of the edges.

The case contains a mid 19th century watchpaper, from J. Glover, Watchmaker of Lincoln, dated 1872.

Robert Bunyan is listed in Lincoln from 1748 (birth) until about 1810.
