Thomas Mudge & William Dutton
London, 1768
Silver gilt and gilt brass pair cases, 48.5 mm
Cylinder escapement

Sold

This is a fine cylinder escapement watch, by the partnership of the great Thomas Mudge and his partner William Dutton.

MOVEMENT : Gilded cylinder movement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock, with diamond endstone. Signed (Mudge & Dutton, London) and numbered (696).
The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap, which is also fully signed.

The movement is in good condition with just a few scratches around the pillar tops. It is running well.

DIAL : The fine white enamel dial is in good condition with no repairs, but with a small chip on the edge at 4, and two very light hairlines from the centre towards 2 and 7.

Fine 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Silver gilt, hallmarked for London, 1768, maker PM.

In good overall condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is also in good condition. The stem and bow are well made replacements..

OUTER CASE : Gilt brass pair case with no maker’s mark.

In good overall condition. The hinge and catch are in good condition and the bezel snaps shut correctly. There is some wear to the catch button, exposing the filler material.

This outer case is a replacement (the original would have been silver gilt) but is a perfect fit and was probably made specially for this watch.

The case maker’s mark on the inner case is probably for Peter Mournier who is documented at Frith Street in London between 1761 and 1769.

William Dutton became partner to Thomas Mudge in around 1750 and took over the business from Mudge in 1771.
