Gilt Pocket Watch by Pascal Hubert, Rouen

Stock No. 1404

Pascal Hubert
Rouen, France, c1700
Gilt case, 61 mm.
Verge escapement, mock pendulum

Sold

An early French ‘oignon’ verge, with mock pendulum verge escapement.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with a very large and beautifully engraved and pierced gilt balance bridge, and cut out window showing the balance. Four elongated Egyptian pillars and a small, early style silver regulator disk.
Signed “PASCAL HUBERT A ROUEN”.

There are a few scratches to the top plate, but generally all in good condition. Running well.

DIAL : Very attractive gilt dial, with blue numerals each painted on a raised enamel cartouche, and enamel minute chapter.
In good condition, except for the repair on the edge at 2 (could be improved). Otherwise just a small chip on the minute ring at 50, small chips to cartouche at 3 and a light hairline to the cartouche at 2.

One of the dial feet is absent, and one is short, so the dial is only held on by one pinned foot.

Matching brass hands, not original.

CASE : A large gilt case, engraved with foliage and scrolls around the bezel and back. The bow and stem appear to be original.

In good condition with even wear to the gilding on the outer surfaces. The hinges are fine and the bezel closes nicely. Good high dome crystal.

Pascal Hubert is listed in Rouen between 1649 and about 1735.
