Verge escapement, quarter repeating

Sold

A mid 18th century Geneva quarter repeating verge, in pierced repousse silver pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock. Four square pillars. Unusual 4 spoke brass balance wheel.
Signed U. Cheneviere.

There are two steels posts on either side of the top plate which would have originally held a removable gilt dustcap. This is now absent..

The movement is in good condition, and is running well.

The repeat, activated by depressing the stem, strikes with 2 steel hammers on the bell, one strike for each hour and double strikes for each quarter. The repeat is reasonably reliable, though occasionally with an extra strike on the high numbers.

DIAL : Fine white enamel dial in almost perfect condition, with just a few very light scratches. Typical continental fancy gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, beautifully engraved to the back and band, and pierced to the band. Internal steel bell.
The pulse piece is complete and functional. This small lever, through the bezel at 7, vibrates as the bell is struck and if pressed, causes the strike to vibrate rather than chime.

In excellent condition throughout.

The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : Silver, with beautiful pierced repousse work, showing Diana the huntress.

A little wear to the head of the figure, resulting in a small hole, but otherwise good.
The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

A sprung button, on the bezel at 7, allows the pulse piece to be actioned without removing the watch from the outer case.

Urbain Cheneviere is listed in Geneva during the first half of the 18th century.
