Peter Wise
London, c1700
Silver repousse pair cases, 55 mm.
Verge movement

Sold

Nice early London silver verge with fine champleve dial and repousse pair case.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced, winged balance cock, large silver regulator disk and four Egyptian pillars. Signed ‘Peter Wise, London’.

In good condition, though the brass hinge piece, attaching the movement to the case, is a replacement. The movement is running well.

DIAL : Fine silver champleve dial, the signed central pierced disk (Wise, LONDON’) with mask over gilt backing. A few scratches around the edge of the dial but in generally nice condition.

Good blued steel beetle and poker hands (early 18th century, not reproductions).

INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark (?E under a crown), with shutter to the winding aperture. In good condition, though with some small dents to the inner rim (mostly to the left) and some wear to the hinge sleeves. The bezel snaps shuts correctly and the high dome, bull’s eye crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : Silver repousse, with raised decoration to the back and bezel (cast solid silver rather than punched out from the back).

There is a little wear to the raised decoration on the back but no holes or other damage. The hinge is fine and the catch are present, though the bezel does not snap shut. The catch button is dented.

Peter Wise (Cheapside, London) is listed in the Clockmakers’ Company from 1693.
