MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock, silver regulator disk and blued screws. Signed ‘John Carr, Coventry’, and numbered (22). Four square pillars.

The movement is protected by a signed and numbered removable gilt dustcap.

All in good original condition and running well.

DIAL : Original white enamel dial, in fine condition with just a few very light scratches. Good. original 18th century gold beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : 22ct. gold, with hallmarks for London, 1776, maker TP? (rubbed).

All in good condition, with just a little compression to the band and light bruises to the back (one resulting is a very thin short crack). The hinge is fine and the bezel closes correctly. The hinge holding the movement is missing the central sleeve but is held firmly.

Good high dome bull’s eye crystal with no damage.

OUTER CASE : A fine 22ct. gold pair case, with wonderful repousse decoration. Some wear at the high points of the repousse work resulting in a few pin holes, though most of the detail is still there. The hinge and catch are fine though the catch button has worn through. The bezel snaps shut nicely.

The gold cases weigh 49.5 gms (excluding movement and crystal).

John Carr is listed in Coventry between 1778 and 1820, and was the son in law of the famous Coventry maker (and mayor) Samuel Vale.
