A fine mid 18th century cylinder by an eminent London maker.

MOVEMENT : Gilt cylinder movement, with nicely engraved and pierced balance cock, blued screws, four beautiful pillars, diamond endstone, and silver regulator disk. Signed (Ellicott, LONDON) and numbered (4381).

There are 2 holes on the edges of the top plate where steel pins would have originally secured a removable brass dustcap. This dustcap is absent, but otherwise the movement is complete, in excellent condition throughout, and running well.

DIAL : Classic mid 18thc white enamel dial in fine condition, with just a few very light surface scratches. Good 18thc gold beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed London hallmark, maker IL. In good condition though the stem and bow are replacements. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut. The high dome, bull’s eye crystal has a few light scratches, but otherwise is fine.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case with no hallmarks. In good condition throughout. The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The catch spring is a replacement.

John Ellicott was partner with his son Edward from 1760, and their watches were signed Ellicott after about 1758. The serial number of this movement (4381) dates it to about 1758.
