Verge calendar, mock pendulum movement

Sold

A mid 18th century calendar verge with a mock pendulum balance.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with a silver plated balance bridge . This has a cut out to reveal the mock pendulum blued brass bob. Signed ‘Jno. Grantham, LONDON’ and numbered 2413. In good condition, though the silver plating on the balance bridge is worn, with the brass showing through. Running well (including the calendar function).

DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with signed central disk (GRANTHAM) and calendar aperture. In reasonable condition, with a little wear around the edges and a gold coloured half hour marker at 8 is missing. Brass hands.

INNER CASE : Silver hallmarks for London, 1769 and maker’s mark WB. In good condition, though with a little compression to the band, a few small dents to the rim and the pendant has been reattached.. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome, bull’s eye crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : Matching hallmarks to the inner The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut correctly. The catch button is dented, otherwise fine.

Although this watch is signed with a London maker, it was probably made on the Continent, possible in Switzerland.
