A mid 18th century London verge, with a fine dial and beautifully pierced inner case.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock, engraved mask, four square pillars, and silver regulator disk. Signed (Wm. Post, LONDON BRIDGE) and numbered (5180). Running, though stops occasionally.

DIAL : Excellent white enamel dial in perfect condition except for a tiny chip at the catch at 6. Fine blued steel beetle and poker hands (original 18th century).

INNER CASE : Silver, engraved and pierced with birds and flowers. No hallmarks. In good condition except for the piece missing on the side near the winding aperture. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut. The high dome, bull’s eye crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : Silver & brass pair case with green leather covering. The metal case itself is in good condition throughout. The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

However the leather covering is missing from half of the bezel and two large pieces are missing from the back, where the leather is quite creased

William Post was in the Clockmakers’ Company between 1766 and 1776, and is listed at London Bridge from before 1727 until at least 1776.
