A beautiful, late 18th century, Paris cylinder in a fine gold and enamel case.

MOVEMENT : Gilt Lepine caliber cylinder movement. All in good condition and running well.

The cuvette is marked : No.3133 L’Epine her.du Roy A Paris.

DIAL : Signed white enamel dial. Restored, but in good condition with just one small chip on the edge at 11 and some discolouration on the edge at 5. Beautiful ornate gilt hands. High dome crystal in fine condition.

CASE : A beautiful gold case, with a fine polychrome enamel panel on the back cover. This is surrounded by a blue guilloche ground, and a ring of white enamel ‘pearls’. The band and bezel are decorated with blue and white enamel. The inside of the back cover bears a maker’s mark GA and there is a tiny gold or maker’s mark stamped on the front of the stem.

The hinges are fine and the front cover closes nicely and springs open when the button on the stem is pressed. There are a few light rub marks to the enamel on the back, but the case is in overall very good condition.

Jean Antoine Lepine worked in Paris (from Geneva) from 1744 until 1810. During some of this time he was the horologer to Louis XV.

This watch was previously in the collection of Adolphe Chapiro, horologer, watch historian and the writer of “La Montre Francaise” the definitive book on antique French watches.
