Charles Cabrier
London, c1740
Gold repousse pair cases
Verge half quarter repeating movement

Sold

This is a rare London repeater, with a half quarter repeating movement, striking the hours, quarters and half quarters (seven and a half minutes). In an exceptionally fine quality repousse case,

MOVEMENT : Excellent gilt half quarter repeating verge movement. Signed CABRIER, LONDON. Finely engraved and pierced balance cock and plate, gilt regulator plate, and blued screws Four square pillars. The movement is protected by a silver dustcap, signed as the movement.
Running well and repeating reliably. All complete except the small pulse piece on the side of the case which should vibrate as the hammers strike. A few small dents to the side of the silver dust cap.

DIAL : 34.5 mm. Later white enamel in good condition except for 3 small repairs on the edge at 5, 6 and 8. This dial is a little later than the movement, probably added in the second half of the 18th century. Fancy gilt hands.

INNER CASE : 40 mm. 22 ct. gold, unmarked but with a maker’s mark IDS under the bell. Beautifully pierced and engraved. In excellent condition throughout except for a weakness around the top of the rim, resulting in a crack (not visible unless the case is open – see last photo). The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine .

OUTER CASE : 47 mm. 22 ct. gold with no marks. Wonderful condition throughout with very little wear to the gold repousse work. The catch and hinge are good and the case snaps shut nicely.

There were several generations of Cabrier working in London through the 18th century. I believe this watch is by Charles II who worked from 1719.
