William Private
London, 1768
Silver gilt repousse pair cases
Verge calendar movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance bridge and plate. Blued screws and silver regulator disk. Signed ‘Wm. Private, London’ and numbered (1504). Very good original condition and running well. The calendar function is also complete and working correctly.

DIAL : Silver champleve with calendar aperture, in very good condition. Fancy gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Silver gilt, hallmarks for London, 1768, rubbed maker’s mark. The hinge is fine. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is ok, with light surface scratches and one small chip on the bezel at 8. The silver case is in generally good condition with very little wear to the gilding, some light bruises to the back and some wear to the stem. The bezel does close but not tightly.

OUTER CASE : Silver gilt, repousse. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely. A little wear to the catch button and small dents to the rim of the bezel. Some wear to the gilding to the high points of the repousse work (silver showing through and some tiny pin holes). At some point the inside of the back has been filled to strengthen the case, and regilded.

In overall good condition and a very attractive case.

William Private is listed in London in 1763.
