Silver & underpainted horn pair cases, 60 mm.
Verge movement

Sold

A large continental verge watch, with a painted dial and excellent gilt/underpainted horn pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with pierced and engraved balance bridge. Running well.

DIAL : White enamel dial, with painted scene and small central chapter. Nice matching gold coloured hands. There are hairlines from the edge, mainly around the top and at 6 o’clock. Also some damage and restoration around the winding aperture.

INNER CASE : Silver, with maker’s mark CAB and case serial number 13198. The hinges are fine and the case closes nicely. Good high dome crystal with just one small chip right on the edge. Good throughout with just some light bruises on the back.

OUTER CASE : Gilt with an underpainted scene of a boar hunt on the horn back. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes nicely. The case is in good condition with no damage other than wear to the gilding. The horn back is also in very good original condition (no restoration). There are surface scratches but no cracks except for a couple of tiny chips right on the edge. About half of the pins are missing but the horn is still held firmly to the case.

This watch is probably French or Swiss and will have been made towards the end of the 18th century.
