Thomas Mudge
London, c1755
Gilt pair cases
Cylinder movement

Sold

wonderful cylinder watch, with rare centre seconds, by this master watchmaker, in good but later gilt pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilded cylinder fusee movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock and diamond endstone. Signed (T. Mudge, London) and numbered (292). All original good condition and running well. The lever on the side of the case at 4 o’clock correctly stars and stops the movement. The dustcap is signed “Tho. Mudge, London”.

DIAL : Cream enamel, 44.5 mm in diameter. It is in perfect condition except for some damage right on the edge at 1. Blued steel hands with a little loss to the blued surface and the second hand is shortened. This dial is a replacement, probably added during the early 19th century.

INNER CASE : Gilt, 49 mm in diameter. Maker’s mark JD. Excellent quality and in fine condition (very little wear to the gilding but probably been regilded). Good crystal with just some light scratches but no other damage.

OUTER CASE : Gilt, 54.58 mm in diameter. Matching maker’s mark to the inner. Again in very good condition and probably regilded.

Like the dial, these cases are 19th century replacements and with the dial were probably made specially for this movement.

The serial number (292) on this movement dates it to 1755 or 1756.
