John Thackwell
Cardiff, 1810
Silver case
Rack lever movement

Sold

A very good quality rack lever movement in a wonderful silver hunter case.

MOVEMENT : Fully signed and numbered (1084). Gilded rack lever jewelled movement with engraved balance cock with diamond endstone. Removeable gilt brass dustcap. A very good quality movement, in excellent condition and running well.

DIAL : 45 mm, cream enamel. Virtually perfect with just one tiny chip, right on the edge at 1 o’clock.

CASE : 56.25 mm. Silver, with engine turned engraving. London hallmarks for 1810, maker JW. This is a very fine, heavy case, in good condition throughout with just a few scratches on the front cover at the stem.
The crystal and hinges are all fine. The engraving is still crisp with little wear.
An interesting feature is the spilt button on the pendant, with one side opening the front cover and the other the back cover. Both spring open when the relevant button is pressed. The back cover snaps shut nicely. The front cover also stays shut but needs the button depressed to close the catch.

There were several generations of John Thackwells in Cardiff, and this watch is probably by John Thackwell II, who is listed in Cardiff from 1780s and died in 1836.
