Gold pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

This is a fine Scottish 22 carat gold watch, in beautifully decorated pair cases, with a fine quality verge movement.

MOVEMENT : Beautiful gilded fusee verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock and plate. Large diamond endstone. Signed and numbered (5969). The movement would originally have had a brass removable dustcap which is now absent. Fine original condition and running well.

DIAL : 36.45 mm. White enamel dial in perfect condition. Nice blued steel serpentine hands.

INNER CASE : 40.5 mm. 22 carat gold, hallmarked for London, 1773, maker IW? Fine condition except for one hinge sleeve which is missing, however the case closes nicely. Good high dome crystal with no damage.

OUTER CASE : 47.5mm. 22 carat gold, with matching hallmarks to the inner. Beautifully decorated on the back with a coronet and initial D (the coronet indicating a titled owner). Generally good condition with little wear, with just one tiny pin hole in the centre. The hinge and catch (including button) are fine and the case closes nicely.
The case contains an interesting old Edinburgh watchpaper.

Archibald Dalzell is included in the Dumfries silversmiths list (1773).
