Verge movement

Sold

Early English verge, with wonderful dial featuring the royal coat of arms, by the clockmaker to George I.

MOVEMENT : Fully signed and numbered (214). Gilt brass verge movement, with ornate pillars, beautifully engraved balance cock and plate, and silver regulator disc. In good, original condition but the balance cock has been repaired at the neck (this is an old but strong repair). Otherwise complete and running well.

DIAL : 42.75 mm. Wonderful silver champleve dial, in very good condition. Signed in the centre, within the gilt royal coat of arms. The chapter ring hours are separated by gold coloured florets. Nice original early 18th century steel hands.

INNER CASE : 50.5 mm. Maker’s mark WI (rubbed) but also the movement number (214). The hinge is fine and the case snaps shut nicely. Good condition throughout though a few light dings on the back and the pendant has been reattached. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : 57.25 mm. Matching maker’s mark and movement number to the inner. The silver is in good condition with a few light dings and an old repair to a short split on the back. The hinge, catch and catch button are fine.

Joseph Antram is listed from 1697 and died in 1723. An important maker, he was clockmaker to George I.
