Charles Pingstone
London, c1730
Silver pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Fully signed (C. Pingstone, London). Gilt brass verge movement, with four wonderfully ornate pillars. Damage to the balance cock foot, which is missing the left hand corner. However the balance cock is still held firmly and the movement is running well. Otherwise complete and original.

DIAL : 34 mm. Very rare ‘momento mori’ silver champleve dial. Inscribed “WATCH & PRAY FOR YOU KNOW NOT THE HOUR” above a scull and crossed bones. The dial is in good undamaged condition. Nice original 18th century beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : 39 mm. No hallmarks. The hinge is fine and the case snaps shut nicely. Overall good condition though the pendant has been reattached. High dome bull’s eye crystal in fine condition.

OUTER CASE : 45.5 mm. Again no hallmarks. In very good condition. The hinge and catch are fine. The only wear is a small dent on the bezel at the catch and the catch button where the silver has worn.

Charles Pingstone (also spelt Pinkston) is listed in London between 1726 and 1744
