Thomas Strange
Kilsby, Warks., 1752
Silver & shell pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge movement, signed with pierced and engraved balance cock. Exceptionally clean and fine condition and running well.

DIAL : 38.25 mm. This later (late 18thc) dial has some damage, with a hairline from the centre to 12, and repairs around the edge at 12, 3 and 6. Very fine gold skeletonised hands.

INNER CASE : 42.65 mm. Silver hallmarks for London, 1752 (rubbed but identifiable). The pendant has been reattached to the case and there is a short split in the centre where the stamped marks have thinned the silver. Otherwise good. The hinge is fine and the case closes nicely. The catch is hidden, and accessed by the small hole in the case (using a pin). This is quite a common feature of cases of this period. High dome bull’s eye crystal in good condition.

OUTER CASE : 51 mm. Silver with underpainted shell or horn covering. Very good colour and in exceptionally fine condition. Just one silver pin missing and one tiny chip to the shell on the bezel. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes nicely.

The case has a nice old watchpaper from Kettering (Northants) which is not far from Kilsby.
