Gilt & shagreen pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : The gilded verge movement is signed (Jno. Ellicott, LONDON) and numbered (1888). Very nice, clean condition, with the gilding still bright and beautiful pillars. All appears to be original and it is running well. There is a small solder repair to a section of the balance cock table (middle top) which could be tidied up.

DIAL : Diameter 36 mm. The white enamel dial is a late 18th century replacement, with hairlines running across the centre, but no repairs. Nice original 18th century steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : 41.5 mm. Gilt brass. In very good condition with a little wear to the gilding around the edge and on the bow/pendant . No repairs or damage. Good high dome bull’s eye crystal with no damage except for a tiny chip on the edge, almost hidden by the bezel.

OUTER CASE : 48.5 mm. Gilt and shell. In excellent condition, and a wonderful colour, with no wear to the gilding. The catch and hinge are fine, with a little wear to the catch button. The case snaps shut nicely. The shell is complete, with no pieces missing or loose, and just one small crack on the bezel and three cracks on the back, the only significant one runs from the neck to the hinge

John Ellicott watches are numbered 1800 from 1740 and 3250 from 1750 so this watch (no. 1888) is from about 1740. Up until 1758 all John Ellicott watches were signed Jno. Ellicott (just signed Ellicott after that).
