Benjamin Downes
Mansfield, Notts., 1798
Silver pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Nicely gilded movement with round pillars and engraved and pierced balance cock. The movement is signed and numbered (163). It is very clean, in good original condition and is running well.

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 40.5 mm in diameter. It is in good condition though with some surface scratches and a repair on the edge between 7 and 8.
Very nice matching black steel hands.

INNER CASE : Full hallmarks for Birmingham, 1798, maker WR. The hinge is in good condition and the case closes nicely. High dome bull’s eye crystal in good condition. The only sign of wear is to the top of the pendant, although the pendant is original without the usual repaired join to the case. Other than this wear, the silver is in very good condition.

OUTER CASE : Matching hallmarks to the inner. Again the hinge is good. The catch and release button are fine and again the silver is in very good condition.

Loomes lists Benjamin Downs in Mansfield between 1790 to 1810.
