Edward Stanton
London, c1680
Silver pair cases, 58.5 mm.
Verge movement

Sold

This is a large and very rare early English gilt/shagreen cased pocket watch, in excellent working condition, with a verge escapement fusee movement, made by Edward Stanton, in London around 1680.

MOVEMENT : Beautiful gilded movement with large winged, engraved and pierced balance cock. Nice wide ‘D’ shaped foot and wonderful pillars. It is signed EDW.STANTON, LONDON. The movement is running well and is in good condition with just some indication of an old repair to the foot of the balance cock, though the balance cock is strong and no break is visible.

DIAL : The silver champleve dial is about 42.5 mm in diameter. It is absolutely superb, with no damage or wear from overcleaning. It is signed in the centre.
Excellent early beetle and poker hands which could be original.

INNER CASE : The gilt on brass case has a maker’s mark “SH”. The hinge is in good condition although the case doesn’t snap shut. Good high dome bulls eye crystal in great condition. The bow and pendant are fine without the usual repaired join to the case. The gilding is in good condition and almost complete with just a little wear to the bow and some wear around the sides. No scratches, dents or repairs.
The back of this inner case is beautifully engraved with probably the first owner’s name and place – “Sarah Grantham 3 Mile X”. Three Mile Cross is a village near Reading in Berkshire

OUTER CASE : Matching maker’s marks to the inner. The hinge is good and the case opens and closes nicely. The catch is fine and the release button still intact but a little worn. The shagreen is about 80% complete around the bezel but mostly absent from the back. However no dents, cracks or damage to the brass case itself.
This is a large case with a diameter of about 58.5mm
