A very substantial silver gilt chatelaine, with old silver marks, possibly Dutch, mid 18th century.
Very good condition, with just even wear to the gilt with the silver showing through.
The chatelaine is decorated with cast medallions. From one side is suspended a gilt and carved amethyst seal, with a flower and the motto ‘MAY YOU POSSESS IT’ carved into the stone in reverse.
From the other side is suspended a gilt watch key, inset with a polished orange coloured agate. The key shaft is broken but the agate is perfect.
The clip to the back of the chatelaine has some rubbed silver marks, which may be Dutch (see photo). The chatelaine probably dates from the second half of the 18th century. It tests as silver.
