T. Wright
London, c1765
Silver repousse pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

A mid 18th century verge with original signed silver champleve dial, in a wonderful silver repousse pair case.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced ‘lace edged’ balance bridge and pierced plate, four square pillars and silver regulator disk. Signed on an engraved banner “T. WRIGHT, LONDON” and numbered (8092). In very nice condition, with the gilding still bright. Running well.

The ‘lace’ decoration is typical of London watches made within about five years either side of 1760.

DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with gold coloured half hour marker rosettes. In very good condition. Signed “Wright, London”. Fancy gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks. In very good condition, though the pendant has been reattached. The hinge and high dome crystal are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : Silver repousse pair case, again with no marks.

Beautifully engraved and pierced with a mythological scene on the back (showing a crowned rider on an eagle ?). The cartouches around the band show portraits and vases of flowers. A wonderful case in excellent condition throughout.

This watch, although having a London signature, was probably made on the Continent, around 1765.
