George Greham
London, c1730
Gold repousse pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with particularly nicely engraved and pierced balance cock. Signed ‘GE. GREHAM, LONDON’. Four square pillars. All in good original condition, and running well.

DIAL : White enamel in reasonable condition, with an old repair around the centre aperture, numerous surface scratches and a chip at the catch at 6. This is a very early enamel dial (mid 18th century), but is probably a replacement of a champleve dial. Gilt hands.

INNER CASE : 22ct. gold, with no hallmark. Stamped L3FR?. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut. Good high dome bull’s eye crystal. The pendant and bow are original. The gold is quite worn, with minor bruises and a compression dent around the band, and wear around the winding aperture, resulting is some short cracks from this hole.

OUTER CASE : A 22ct. gold pair case, with wonderful repousse work. There is wear to the repousse work, resulting in a number of pin holes to the high points. The hinge and catch are good and the bezel snaps shut nicely. Just a small dent to the catch button.

The gold cases weigh 36.7 gms (excluding movement and crystal).

The signature ‘GE. GREHAM’ is interesting. This watch is contemporary with early watches by the great George Graham, and the similar name is probably an attempt by the maker to emulate the master watchmaker.
