Silver & horn pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

A unusually large London pair cased verge in an interesting horn outer case, underpainted with a naval scene.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge fusee movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock. Signed and numbered (14894). All in good original condition, with a few scratches around the pillars. Running well.

DIAL : White enamel, in very good condition, with just some scratches around the edge. No hairlines or repairs. Very fine matching gold hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, hallmarked for London, 1796, and with movement serial number. Maker’s mark IG. Very good condition throughout. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine. The hinge and catch are also fine and the case closes properly.

OUTER CASE : Silver rims and pins, with underpainted horn covering. Good overall condition and no repairs. Twenty five pins missing from the bezel and twenty one from the back. There are two sections of horn missing from the bezel (each about 12 mm) but none from the back. There are 2 short cracks (from the hinge) on the back and a dent to the horn, in the centre just below the neck. The hinge, catch and catch button are fine, and the case snaps shut correctly.
