Silver & shagreen triple cases
Verge movement

Sold

An unusually small Liverpool verge in silver repousse and shagreen triple cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge fusee movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock, blued screws and regulator disk. Signed and numbered (4861). All in good original condition. Running well.

DIAL : 29.5 mm. White enamel, in quite good condition, but with a scratch from the edge at 9 towards the centre of the dial, some smaller scratches, and a small repair on the edge at 6. Later gold coloured hands.

INNER CASE : 33 mm. Silver, hallmarked for London, 1768. Maker’s mark RP?. Reasonable condition though the pendant has been reattached, and there is a short split on the right hand side (see photo). The high dome crystal is fine. The hinge is worn, though the case closes properly.

This case was originally gilded, though only the gilding on the inside remains. The pendant and bow are gilt brass so retain their gold colour, and would originally have matched the gilt case.

MIDDLE CASE : 39.4 mm. Wonderful little silver repousse case. Very good condition throughout with just a little wear to the high points of the repousse work. The hinge and catch are fine (button worn down) and the case closes correctly.

As for the inner case, this was was originally gilded. Some traces of the gilding remain on the repousse surface, and on the inside rims.

OUTER CASE : 46 mm. Gilt brass with shagreen covering. The brass is in good condition. The hinge, catch and catch button are all fine and the case snaps shut nicely. There are a few copper pins missing from the bezel but just three from the back. The shagreen on the back is almost complete with just a couple of small pieces missing on the edge, near the catch. Good surface and nice green colour. About half of the shagreen is missing from the bezel.
