Silver pair cases
Verge quarter repeating movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Signed (John Muret, LONDON) and numbered (157). Gilded verge movement with beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock. Quarter repeating movement, with 2 steel hammers striking the bell, activated by pushing in the pendant.

The repeat works but the pendant is very stiff and slightly bent, and the quarters not firing reliably. The movement should be held correctly within the case by a pulse piece held by the slot in the case at 7 o’clock (see photo of dial). This should be replaced so that the movement is held firmly.

DIAL : 31.75 mm, original white enamel, in nice condition but with a repair on the edge between 10 and 11, and another at the catch at 6. Two very light hairlines from the centre and a few scratches.

INNER CASE : 39.7 mm. Beautifully engraved and pierced inner case. The case is in good condition with just a little compression around the band and at the pendant. The high dome, bull’s eye crystal is fine. The bell, within the inner case, has been cracked and repaired, though still has a clear chime.

OUTER CASE : 50 mm. Silver and, like the inner case, no marks. Engraved and pierced around the edge of the back. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut correctly. The catch button has worn down.

John Muret is listed in London in 1761.
