Francis Gregg
London, c1700
Silver pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

This is a very rare and early example of a ‘name’ dial where the original owner’s name is used instead of the hours on the chapter ring. These were more common at the end of the 18th century on enamel dials.

MOVEMENT : Signed and numbered (224) gilt brass verge movement, with four beautifully ornate pillars, wonderful engraved balance cock and plate, and large silver regulator disc. In complete and good condition. Running well.

DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with owner’s name ‘HENRY HAWKINS’. Nice early 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. The silver champleve dial is perfect but there is a small section of the brass dial plate rim missing at 2 o’clock.

INNER CASE : Maker’s mark WB and movement serial number (224). Excellent condition throughout, and snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : No maker’s marks. The spring has been replaced and case is in excellent condition throughout. Again snaps shut nicely.

Francis Gregg is listed from 1691 until 1747 (though intermittently as he was bankrupted twice).
