John Laight
London, 1734
Gold repousse pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Fine gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock and plate. Signed “John Laight, London” and numbered (2303). Excellent original condition and running well.

DIAL : 37.75 mm. Fine white enamel dial, in very good condition with just a couple of tiny flakes around the centre hole. Nice matching gold hands. This is a late 18th century dial, so a replacement.

INNER CASE : 43 mm. 22 carat gold. Hallmarked for London, 1734. The maker’s mark is rubbed. The hinge is fine and the case closes nicely. Good high dome crystal with no damage. Excellent condition throughout.

OUTER CASE : 49 mm. 22 carat gold. No hallmarks, which is common for a repousse case of this date. The hinge and catch are fine. Wear to the high points, with some small holes but no repairs.
The total weight of the watch is 99 gms.

A John Laight is recorded in Birmingham between 1730 and 1734 so this could be the same maker.
