This is a fine 22 carat gold watch, with a beautifully pair case, and a fine quality cylinder movement, by a great maker. All original, including the dial which unfortunately has some damage.

MOVEMENT : High quality gilded fusee cylinder movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock and plate. Large diamond endstone. Signed and numbered (5738). The gilt brass dustcap has matching signature and serial number. Fine original condition and running well.

DIAL : 36 mm. White enamel dial, with hairlines and repairs, all outside the chapter ring. Fine 18th century gold beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : 42 mm. 22 carat gold, hallmarked for London, 1766, maker TL. Also marked with the same serial number as the movement. Fine condition except for a couple of very light bruises on the back. The hinge is fine and the case closes nicely. Good high dome crystal with no damage.

OUTER CASE : 49.25mm. 22 carat gold. No hallmarks, which is common for a repousse case of this date. Again the hinge and catch are fine, and the case closes nicely. A wonderful case in excellent condition, with just minimal wear to the button.

The cases, excluding movement but including crystal, weigh 66gms.

The outer case contains an interesting old calendar watchpaper. By Ellicott & Smith. These company were successors to John Ellicott and were in business (also in Royal Exchange, London) between about 1830 and 1840.

John Ellicott watches are numbered 4770 from 1760 and 6453 from 1770. From 1758 all John Ellicott watches were simply signed Ellicott.
