John Rivers
London, c1770
Gilt & shagreen pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge movement, fully signed (Jn. Rivers, London) and numbered (1562). Original condition and running well.

DIAL : 35.75 mm. White enamel. In overall very good condition with a short hairline on the edge at 9 and a few scratches, the worst on the edge at 2.

INNER CASE : 40.75 mm. Gilt brass, in good condition with no dents but wear to the gilding. The bow and pendant appear to be original but the pendant has been reattached and there is an old solder repair to the bow. High dome bull’s eye crystal in good condition. The hinge is fine and the case snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : 48 mm. Gilt with shagreen covering. Very good colour to the shagreen. There is some shagreen surface missing on the back, especially around the rim, and some restoration to the bezel where a green coloured filler has been added to the rim. However still a nice case with a good colour. The hinge is fine and the catch spring is intact though the button is missing.

John Rivers is listed in London from before 1774 until 1785.
