Gilt & shell pair cases
Verge movement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Nicely gilded movement in good condition, with very few scratches and no wear to the gilding. Beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock with a ‘lace edge’ to both the balance cock and false plate. It is running, but a little fast (8 minutes per hour) so needs some adjustment. The movement is signed and numbered (6482).

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 34.5 mm in diameter. It is in perfect condition with no chips, hairlines or repairs.

INNER CASE : Gilded brass case, with the same serial number as the movement. The hinge is in good condition and the case closes nicely. High dome crystal in good condition. The bow and pendant are fine. The case is in good condition with just some wear to the gilding on the outside but the gilding is fine on the inside. No dents, damage or repairs. The back is nicely engraved with a former owner’s name “Ann Price”.

OUTER CASE : Gilt brass and shell case in nice condition. The hinge, catch and button are fine and the case snaps shut nicely. The shell on the bezel is complete except for one small chip, about 3mm long. The shell on the back is complete except for the large piece missing along one side (see photo).

This is a very elegant 18th century English gilt and shell verge watch, with a particularly good movement. The ‘lace edging’ dates the watch to around 1760.
