This is a wonderful English sold gold pair cased pocket watch, in fine condition, with a verge escapement fusee movement, and gold dial. It was made by Robert Cawley, in Chester around 1730.

MOVEMENT : Typical early 18th century English verge movement. Nicely gilded movement, with square pillars and wide D foot to the balance cock. Signed R. CAWLEY, CHESTER and numbered (86). It is in fine condition and running well.

DIAL : The signed gold dial is about 37.5 mm in diameter. It is in excellent condition with just a little of the black wax infill missing from parts of a few numerals towars the bottom. No scratches or wear.
Nice matching steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Indecipherable hallmarks but tested as 22 ct gold. The case is in good condition with hinge and catch fine. The case snaps shut nicely. High dome crystal in fine condition. The bow and pendant are fine but with the usual repaired join to the case, though I believe are original. There are no dents, scratches, excessive wear or repairs.

OUTER CASE : A stunning 22ct solid gold repousse pair case, in excellent condition. A small amount of wear to the high points on the back and slight dent to the release button, otherwise perfect. No other damage or repairs.

Loomes lists Robert Cawley working in Chester from 1728 until his death in 1743. The distinctive wide foot of the balance cock would date this watch towards the beginning of this period.
