No. 456 Lever
– James McCabe, London, c1870
This is a gilt cased lever pocket watch made by James McCabe, at the
Royal Exchange, London, probably around 1870.
MOVEMENT
: Good quality, three quarter plate lever movement with gold balance
wheel and diamond endstone. Fully signed, numbered (04834)
and
running well.
DIAL : The signed and numbered (as movement) white
enamel dial is in perfect condition except for a small repaired chip,
right on the edge at 12 (hidden by the bezel).
CASE : The gilt
brass case is 44.85mm in diameter. The gilding is complete on
the
inside and worn through to the brass on the outside, but otherwise the
case and crystal are fine. Maker's mark AT.
The movement has probably been recased at some time, as it is wound
from the back and there is no winding aperture present now.

| No. 521 14ct hunter, minute repeating, chronograph - Swiss, c1880
This
is a Swiss pocket watch, with a minute repeating chronograph movement,
in a 14 carat rose gold full hunter case. Made around 1880.
MOVEMENT
: Frosted gilt movement, unsigned. Clean condition though there
is one small area of corrosion on the lower plate, near the
escapement. The watch, chronograph (start/stop/reset centre
seconds) and repeating functions are all working correctly.
DIAL : The white enamel dial is in perfect condition.
CASE
: The large hunter case is marked as 14 carat gold on all three covers
with Swiss hallmarks. The back and front covers are engine turned
with an empty cartouche on the front. These covers are in good
condition with just one small dent on the back. The hinges are
fine and the front cover springs open when the crown is pressed.
There are some small dents around the band and some scratches and dents
on the bezel. There should be a glass protecting the movement, under the cuvette behind the back cover, but this is absent.
The case is just over 53.5 mm in diameter (excluding the crown) and the watch weighs 100 grams (including the movement). |

425 Gun metal, double dial,
calendar, lever -
Swiss, c1880
This is a double faced Swiss calendar watch, retailed by R. Bonner
Thomas of Portmadoc, in Wales.
MOVEMENT
: Good quality Swiss gilt lever movement. The calendar work
is
engraved “BREVET No. 24914 MODELE DEPOSE No.
102”. It is in good condition and is running
well.
The watch and all of the calendar functions are working.
WATCH
DIAL : Fully signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds and moon
phase aperture. The only damage is a hairline between the
edge
and the moon phase aperture, at 10 o'clock.
CALENDAR DIAL : Very dirty and some rubbing/fading of the numbers to
the top left.
CASE
: Diameter 52.25mm. The gun metal case is in good
condition
with no cracks or scratches to the two mineral crystals (not
synthetic). The crown and bow are of gilded brass with some
wear
to the gilding on the bow.
The watch winds, sets and runs well. All of the calendar
adjustment buttons and functions work correctly. |

388 18ct gold, miniature half hunter case

Le
Roy & Fils, Paris, c1880
This is a tiny, solid
18ct gold, half hunter cased watch, in good condition, made around the
middle of the 19th century by Le Roy & Fils of Paris, but
retailed
from their London premises.
MOVEMENT : Good quality, jewelled gilt bar
movement, in excellent condition and running well.
DIAL : The white enamel dial is perfect except for one scratch near 11
o'clock.
CASE
: The half hunter case is of solid 18 carat gold with all 3 covers
marked as 18 ct gold (18K) and each with a French gold mark.
The
inner crystal is perfect and the outer has a few scratches.
The
case itself has a few surface scratches and a tiny bit of damage to the
crown, but these are minor. No repairs and all hinges
fine.
The front cover springs open nicely when the crown is
depressed.
The inner case is engraved as follows :

hunter, lever - G.E. Frodsham,
London, 1889
MOVEMENT : Good
quality ¾ plate lever movement, split bimetallic balance with over coil
hairspring. The movement is signed “G.E. FRODSHAM, 31
GRACECHURCH STREET, LONDON” and engraved “1875/16722”. Excellent,
clean condition and running well.
DIAL : The signed white enamel dial is perfect.
CASE
: 41mm. Fully hallmarked for 18ct gold, London, 1889, maker
“G.E.F.” and engraved with the movement number 16722. Excellent
condition throughout.

| No. 520 14ct hunter, quarter repeating - Swiss, c1890
This
is a Swiss pocket watch, with a quarter hour repeating movement, in a
14 carat rose gold full hunter case. Made around 1890.
MOVEMENT
: Frosted gilt movement, marked with movement number 45833. The
repeater function strikes one gong for the hours and two gongs for the
quarters. Nice clear chimes. The movement is running well
and keeps good time.
DIAL : The white enamel dial is in perfect condition.
CASE
: The large hunter case is marked as 14 carat gold on all three
covers. Also marked VOLTA, 20031 and Swiss hallmarks on
each cover.
The overall condition is good with no major
problems, just a few shallow dents around the band and one small dent
on the front cover. The spring to the front cover is absent so
that it does not spring open when the crown is pressed.
The case is just over 52mm in diameter (excluding the crown) and the watch weighs 94 grams (including the movement).

hunter case, minute repeating - Barth &
Fils, Geneva, c1890
This
is a substantial, solid rose gold cased watch, with a
minute/quarter/hour repeating movement, made by J. Barth &
Fils, in
Geneva, for the Russian market, towards the end of the 19th century.
MOVEMENT
: Frosted gilt movement, compensated balance and hammers striking on
two gongs. The repeater function strikes
one gong for
the hours, two gongs for the quarters and then one gong for the
minutes. It is working perfectly with nice clear
chimes.
The movement is running well and keeps good time.
DIAL :
The signed white enamel dial is in virtually perfect condition with
just a very feint scratch or hairline from the centre towards 10
(almost invisible).
CASE : The large full hunter case is of
solid 18 carat rose coloured gold. All three covers are marked for 18
carat, case number 8539. The two back covers are also marked
with
Swiss gold marks.
The case is in very good condition with no
personal engravings. All of the hinges are fine and
the
front cover springs open fully when the crown is pressed.
There
are no noticeable scratches, dents or repairs.
The inner curvette is engraved in Russian so presumably this watch was
made for export to Russia.
This
is a large watch. The case is 55.25 mm in diameter (excluding
the
crown) and the watch weighs 134 grams (including the movement). |

This is a small
solid 18ct gold, half hunter cased watch, made by the Goldsmith's
Company, Regent Street, London, in about 1902.
MOVEMENT
: Good quality ¾ plate lever movement, in excellent
condition and running well. Engraved “Goldsmiths'
Company.
112 Regent Street, LONDON 255681”.
DIAL : The signed white
enamel dial is fine except for 2 hairlines. The first is on
the
edge between 11 and 12. The second is a very light hairline
running from the edge at 6 up towards the centre.
CASE : The
half hunter case is of solid 18 carat gold with all 3 covers fully
hallmarked for London, 18ct, 1902, maker JW. The stem and bow
are
also hallmarked for 18ct. The inner crystal is perfect and
the
outer has no scratches but a small flake on the edge. The
case
itself has a few light surface scratches but these are minor.
No
repairs and all hinges fine. The blue enamel within
the
chapter ring is fine with none missing.
The gold case is 36.5 mm in diameter (excluding the crown) and the
watch weighs about 51 grams (including the movement). |

& Son,
Liverpool, 1919
This watch has a Swiss lever
movement in a 9ct gold half hunter case and was retailed by Thomas
Russell & Son, in Liverpool around 1919.
MOVEMENT :
Good quality 17 jewel lever movement. It is running
well.
Engraved “THOS RUSSELL & SON, LIVERPOOL,
SWISS
MADE, 2541, 17 JEWELS, ADJUSTED TO 3
POSITIONS”.
DIAL : The signed white enamel dial is perfect.
CASE
: The half hunter case is of solid 9 carat gold with all 3 covers fully
hallmarked (maker ALD). The front cover has the year mark for
Birmingham 1919. The stem is also hallmarked for
9ct.
Both crystals are fine with no chips or scratches..
The
case is fine except for two small dents on the front (near 5 and 8 of
the chapter ring). No repairs and all hinges are
good. The front springs open when the bow is
depressed. The dark blue enamel within the chapter
ring is
fine with none missing.
The gold case is 49.5 mm in diameter (excluding the crown) and the
watch weighs about 98 grams (including the movement). |

350 Silver purse case,

c1920
This is a solid silver cased
purse or vesta case watch, with jump hour and digital minute dial, made
by Clarte in Switzerland, probably around 1920.
MOVEMENT :
Jewelled lever movement, signed and running well. The movement is wound
and set by the winder under the lid. It is fixed in the case
by 2
screws next to the winder.
CASE: The solid silver case
is about 46mm by 35mm and is signed CLARTE. It is
marked as
silver (.925) with an import stamp. The inside lid
is
engraved as follows :
BREVET
S.D.G.T. DEPOSE FRANCE & ETRANGER.
CONDITION : The
movement winds, sets and runs well with the jump hour mechanism working
well. The lid of the case snaps shut nicely. The
silver is
in good overall condition though there are 2 scratches to the left of
the dial apertures which could be polished out. The crystal
aperture windows are fine.
