No. 512    Gilt pair case, verge   -   James Payne,  London, c1800
MOVEMENT : Good quality gilded verge movement, with blued screws and diamond endstone.  It is signed (James Payne, 17 Foster Lane, London) and numbered (2915).  Very nice, clean condition with the gilding still bright, no scratches and the screw heads still blued.  All is original and it is running well.   

DIAL : 42.5 mm.  The white enamel dial, with an unusual chapter ring, is in good condition with just some light surface scratches and a light hairline running across the top between 11 and 12.  Nice gold coloured fleur de lys hands.

INNER CASE : 46.5 mm.  Gilt on brass.  Good condition with the gilding almost complete.  High dome bull's eye crystal with some surface scratches but no chips or damage.  Hinges fine and the case snaps shut nicely.  The pendant/bow is a replacement as the gilding is a different colour to the rest of the case, though it has been very well done.

OUTER CASE : 52.5 mm.  Brass gilt, maker's mark GC.  Excellent condition, with hinge and catch fine.  Closes nicely.

No. 447     Silver hunter case, verge   -   Charles Mauger,  Jersey,  1802
This is a silver hunter cased verge, made by Charles Mauger in Jersey, around 1802.

MOVEMENT : The gilded verge fusee movement, with a particularly finely engraved and pierced balance cock, is in good condition and is running well. 
It is signed and numbered (No. 1 ?).

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 46 mm in diameter.  It is in reasonable condition but with one hairline at 10 and some chips around the winding aperture.  No repairs.

CASE : Diameter 57.25 mm.   Silver hallmarks for London, 1802, maker WL.  Very good overall condition with no repairs.   Good crystal with no damage. 
The hinges and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely.  A very good hunter case.

Loomes lists Charles Martin Mauger in Jersey in 1810.

No. 448     Silver pair case, verge   -   Richardson,  London,  1803
This is a silver pair cased verge, made by B. Richardson, in London around 1803.

MOVEMENT : The gilded verge fusee movement is in good condition and is running well.  It is signed and numbered (5082).

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 45 mm in diameter.  It is in good condition with just a small repair at 6.

INNER CASE : Diameter 49.25 mm.   Silver hallmarks badly rubbed but maker BN.  Quite good overall condition with no repairs but numerous small bruises on the back.   Good high dome bull's eye crystal with light scratches but no chips or cracks.  The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : Diameter 58 mm.   Silver hallmarks for London 1803, maker BN, matching the inner.  The hinge and catch are again fine and the case snaps shut, though the button catch has worn down.   Quite good overall condition but again with small bruises on the back.

The back is nicely engraved with a single stem of wheat.

No. 531     18ct gold pair case, verge   -   John Brown,  Marlborough,  1805
MOVEMENT : The gilded verge fusee movement, with a particularly finely engraved and pierced balance cock, is in fine condition and is running well.  It is signed and dated (1805).

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 45 mm in diameter.  It is in very good condition with just some surface scratches but no repairs.

INNER CASE : Diameter 48 mm.   Hallmarks for 18ct gold, London, 1805, maker CM.  Good overall condition with no repairs, but one sleeve missing from the hinge and a little wear around the catch.   Good high dome crystal with no damage.  The  case snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : Diameter 53.5  mm.   Gold hallmarks matching the inner.  The hinge and catch are again fine and the case snaps shut. Excellent overall condition with no damage or wear. 
This case contains an interesting watchpaper (silk not paper) from “CHIVERS, Chronometer. Watch and Clock makers of MARLBOROUGH”.

The gold case, without movement, weights 57 gms.

No. 450     Silver pair case, verge   -   John Barton,  London,  1807
This is a silver pair cased verge, made by John Barton, in London around 1807.

MOVEMENT : The gilded verge fusee movement is in good condition and is running well.  It is signed and numbered (6375).

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 46.5 mm in diameter.  It is in very good condition with just a few light surface scratches.

INNER CASE : Diameter 50.5 mm.   Silver hallmarks for London, 1807.  Good overall condition with no repairs or damage, though the pendant has worn so is thinner than the bow (which may be a replacemeny).   Perfect high dome crystal.  The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : Diameter 57.5 mm.   Matching hallmarks to the inner.  The hinge and catch are again fine and the case snaps shut, though the button catch has worn down.   Again in overall very good condition.

No. 514    Silver pair case, verge  -   Archibald Buchanan,   Dublin,  1808
MOVEMENT : Good quality gilded verge fusee movement, with diamond endstone, and particularly finely engraved and pierced balance cock.  Signed and numbered “1328”.  Good original condition and running well..

DIAL : White enamel,  42.25 mm. in diameter.  It is in fine condition with just some surface scratches and a little rubbing at the edge between 6 and 8.  These are very minor imperfections on a fine dial.  Gold coloured hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, 46.25 mm in diameter.   Hallmarked for Dublin, 1808.  Good overall condition,  The hinge is fine and the case snaps shut nicely.  Good high dome bull's eye crystal with some surface scratches but no other damage.  Wear to the bow which could be a replacement.

OUTER CASE : Silver, 53.75 mm in diameter.   Matching hallmarks to the inner, but also with the maker's mark (OAN) for Arthur O'Neil.  Good hinge and catch, though the catch button has worn down.

Loomes lists Archibald Buchanan in Dublin between 1781 and 1822.

No. 464     Silver pair case, calendar, verge   -   1808
A large silver pair cased watch, with a calendar dial and verge movement, made around 1808.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge fusee movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock.  Not signed or numbered.  It is running well and the calendar function is also complete and working.

DIAL : Beautiful white convex enamel dial,  47 mm in diameter.  It is in perfect condition with no damage or repairs. 

INNER CASE : Silver, 50 mm in diameter.   Hallmarked for London, 1808.  Maker's mark TCRC  Excellent condition with no repairs and just a few light scratches on the back (including the no. 3608).  The hinge and catch are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.  Good high dome bull's eye crystal with no damage.   

OUTER CASE : Silver, 57.5 mm in diameter.   Matching hallmarks to the inner.  Hinge , catch and catch button are fine and the case closes nicely.  Excellent condition.

The movement shows no maker's name or serial number but I think that there is a small plate missing which would have been attached to the top plate and would have been engraved with the maker's name and serial number.

No. 503    Silver pair case, verge  -   James Berndale,  London,  1809

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge fusee movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock.  Signed “Ja. Berndale, London” and numbered “43690”.  Good original condition and running well..

DIAL : White enamel,  44.5 mm. in diameter.  It is in good condition, with some surface scratches and a nibble right on the edge at 2.

INNER CASE : Silver, 48.5 mm in diameter.   Hallmarked for London, 1809, maker's mark WM.  A few light bruises but good overall condition,  The hinge is fine and the case snaps shut nicely.  Good high dome bull's eye crystal with some light scratches but no other damage.   

OUTER CASE : Silver, 55 mm in diameter.   Good hinge and catch but the case has been repaired with wear to the base filled from the inside.  This repair has been very well done.  A rubbed hallmark on the bezel survives with the London year mark for 1809, so these cases appear to be a matching pair.

No. 462     Silver pair case, verge   -   J. Collingwood,  London,  1809
A large silver pair cased watch, with a  verge movement and “name” dial, made by J. (probably Joseph) Collingwood, London, in 1809.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge fusee movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock.  Signed and numbered (383).  The steel coqueret, added to the centre of the balance cock, appears to be a later addition.  It is running well.

DIAL : White enamel,  45.5 mm in diameter, with the name “WILLIAM CANNON' in place of numbers.  It is in good condition except for one hairline from 5 o'clock and a small chip on the edge at 6.  No repairs.

INNER CASE : Silver, 50 mm in diameter.   Hallmarked for Birmingham, 1809.  Maker's mark EM.  Good condition and no repairs.  Good high dome bull's eye crystal with no damage.    The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes properly.

OUTER CASE : Silver, 48 mm in diameter.   Matching hallmarks to the inner.  Hinge and catch fine and the case closes nicely.  The catch button has worn down and has been filled with a small white crystal.

No. 300    Silver pair cases,  verge    -    Rea,  1809

An English silver pair cased pocket watch, in good working condition, with a verge escapement fusee movement, made around 1809.

 

MOVEMENT : Nicely gilded movement with round pillars and engraved balance cock. The movement is simply signed “Rea” and numbered (12182).  

It is running well.

 

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 42.5 mm in diameter.  It is in good condition with just two light hairlines, one running around the edge from 9 to 12 and the other running out from the centre towards 11.  No repairs.  Nice matching gold coloured hands.

 

INNER CASE : Full hallmarks for London, 1809, maker TCRC.  The hinge is in good condition and the case closes nicely.  High dome bull's eye crystal in good condition.  The bow and pendant are fine without the usual repaired join to the case. The silver is in good condition with just 2 small dents on the back.

 

OUTER CASE :  Diameter 53mm.  Matching hallmarks to the inner.  Again the hinge is good.  The catch and release button are intact although the button is worn down.  The silver is in good condition with just one small dent on the back near the catch rivet.

No. 400   Silver hunter case,  verge   -   Richard Ganthony,  London,  c1812
An English silver hunter cased watch with a verge movement, made by Richard Ganthony, in London, around 1812.

MOVEMENT : Nice quality verge movement, with unusual balance cock and diamond endstone.  It is fully signed (RD. GANTHONY  Lombard St.  LONDON), numbered (1062) and is running well.  The movement is in very nice condition but is missing the brass dust cap.

DIAL : The white  enamel dial is about 43 mm in diameter.  It has a few light scratches and  two chips on the edge at 5 and 6 o'clock.

CASE : The case is hallmarked for London, maker WL, but the year mark is rubbed (possibly 1812).  The hunter case is in reasonable condition with a few light bruises and scratches.  The hinges are ok and the covers close.  The outer cover opens nicely as the button on the pendant is depressed.  The inner glazed cover snaps shut but is tight.   The crystal is fine.

No. 359    Silver pair cases,  verge    -    Thomas Huntington,  Carlisle,  1813
This is a large George III English silver pair cased pocket watch, in working condition, with a verge escapement fusee movement, made around 1813.

MOVEMENT : Very clean, almost mint, gilded movement, with blued screws and stop lever on the side of the case.  Particularly finely pierced balance cock. The movement is running well.  It is fully signed and numbered (8237).

DIAL : The large white enamel dial, with subsidiary seconds dial, is about 46.5 mm in diameter.  No repairs but 3 hairlines and a shallow chip at 6 o'clock.  The gold edge to the seconds dial has been rubbed on the right hand side.  Blued steel hands.

INNER CASE : Hallmarks for Birmingham 1813, maker's mark JM.  The case is in very good condition and snaps shut nicely.  The high dome bull's eye crystal has a few light scratches but no chips or cracks.  The bow and pendant are fine without the usual repaired join to the case.  The silver is in very good condition with no significant scratches or dents.

OUTER CASE :  A heavy case, with matching hallmarks to the inner and again in fine condition.    The hinge and catch are good and the case snaps shut properly.

No. 348     Silver pair cases,  verge    -    John Smith,   Wrexham,  1814
This is a large George III silver pair cased pocket watch, in very good working condition, with a verge escapement fusee movement and portrait balance cock, made around 1814 by John Smith in Wrexham.

MOVEMENT : Very clean, gilded movement with beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock.  Nice portrait of a gentleman in military uniform engraved on the balance cock.  The movement is signed (Jno. Smith, Wrexham) and numbered (285). It is running well.

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 44.5 mm in diameter.  It is in fine condition with just one tiny chip on the edge at 7 and a short hairline between 3 and 4. Otherwise no chips, hairlines or repairs.  Brass hands.

INNER CASE : Hallmarks for Birmingham 1814, maker's mark JM.  The hinge is in good condition and the case snaps shut  nicely.  The high dome bull's eye crystal has no chips or cracks but some surface scratches.  The bow and pendant are fine but with the usual repaired join to the case.  This is a nice heavy case, in good condition with just a few scratches on the back but no dents.

OUTER CASE :  Diameter 55 mm.  Matching hallmarks to the inner.  The hinge and catch are fine, though the catch release button is worn.  The case closes nicely and the silver is in very good condition.

Loomes lists John Smith in Wrexham from 1793 (died in 1830).

No. 377     Gilt pair cases,  verge    -    Nichols,    Newport (Isle of Wight),  1815
This is a large gilt brass cased pocket watch, made by Nichols of Newport on the Isle of Wight, around 1815.

MOVEMENT : A good quality verge fusee movement with diamond endstone.  Nicely blued screws and balance end cap.  It is signed and numbered (45675).  The movement is in very fine condition, with the gilding still bright, and is running well. 

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 44.25mm in diameter.  It is in almost perfect condition with just some tiny surface marks.  Unusual matching gold hands.

INNER CASE : Diameter 48mm.   Maker's mark WL.   The case is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage.  The gilding is intact on the inside and worn around the edges and pendant on the outside.  The high dome crystal is perfect.

OUTER CASE : Diameter 55mm.  The case is in good condition with no dents or scratches.  The hinge and catch are fine though with some wear to the catch button.  The original gilding has worn off evenly, revealing the brass.

Loomes lists James Nichols in Newport (Isle of Wight) between 1814 and 1839.   The style of the balance cock indicates that this watch is from the start of this period.  The watch case contains three watch papers, one from Newport (IOW) and the others from Winchester.

No. 530   Rose gold repeating cylinder – France,  c1820
An 18ct rose gold cased pocket watch, with a quarter/hour repeating cylinder movement.  It was made around 1820, probably in France, though could have been Switzerland.

MOVEMENT : Interesting cylinder movement, incorporating an hour/quarter repeating function which is activated by pushing down the stem.  The repeater strikes two gongs, with one chime for the hours and two for the quarters. The repeating function can be disabled by a slide button on the side of the case. 
The movement has an English style balance cock, with large diamond endstone.  This is an unusual feature on a Continental watch, but it is definitely the original balance cock for this movement.

DIAL : The fine white enamel dial is about 50 mm in diameter.  There are a few light surface scratches but no other damage or repairs.  Nice Breguet type gold hands. The mineral crystal has a couple of chips, right on the edge at 5.

CASE : The engine turned gold case is 54 mm in diameter (excluding pendant etc.) and weighs 123 gms (including the movement). No hallmarks but tested as high carat gold.  The gilt brass cuvette has a serial number 748 which matches that on the gold case.
All hinges and catches are fine and both covers (and bezel) snap closed.
The case has no repairs, but there is wear to the back where the engine turned decoration has worn away, some wear to the pendant and some small dents around the edge of the gold back cover.  This back cover does close, but not tightly against the band, so is slightly bent.

No. 519   Gold repeating cylinder, parachute escapement – France,  c1820
A French 18ct rose gold cased pocket watch, with a quarter/hour repeating cylinder movement and interesting parachute feature on the escapement.  It was made around 1820 in France.

MOVEMENT : High quality, gilded cylinder movement.  It incorporates an hour/quarter repeating function which is activated by pushing down the stem.  The repeater strikes two gongs, with one chime for the hours and two for the quarters. The repeating function can be disabled by a slide button on the side of the case.  The movement has a few scratches but both watch and repeating functions are working well. 

DIAL : The silver engine turned dial is about 45mm in diameter.  There are a few scratches and minor dents around the edge but nothing too bad.  Nice Breguet type gold hands. The mineral crystal is fine.

CASE : The engine turned gold case is 48 mm in diameter (excluding pendant etc.) and weighs 68 gms (including the movement). There is a triple chevron mark on the  case (French mark for 18 carat gold).  Also serial numbers 6016,  786 and the initials EP.   The cuvette is inscribed  – ECHAPPEMENT A CYLINDRE QUATRE TROUS EN RUBIS COMPENSATEUR ET PARACHUTE.   NO. 786
All hinges and catches are fine and both covers (and bezel) snap closed nicely.   The case is in good condition with no damage or repairs and just even wear to the back where the engine turned decoration has worn.

The parachute escapement was invented by Breguet in 1790 as a form of shock protection.

No. 358    Silver pair cases,  verge    -    J. Morgan,   London,  1820
This is a George III English silver pair cased pocket watch, in good working condition, with a verge escapement fusee movement, made around 1820.

MOVEMENT : Very clean, gilded movement, with blued screws.  Running but a little fast (gaining 4 minutes per hour).  It is fully signed and numbered (120).

DIAL : The large white enamel dial is about 45.75 mm in diameter.  It is in good condition but with some repairs around the edge (the main one at 9 o'clock). 

INNER CASE : Hallmarks for London 1820, maker's mark SB.  The case is in very good condition and snaps shut nicely.  The high dome bull's eye crystal has some scratches but no chips or cracks.  The bow and pendant are fine without the usual repaired join to the case.  The silver is in very good condition with no significant scratches or dents.

OUTER CASE :  Matching hallmarks to the inner and again in fine condition.    The hinge and catch are good and the case snaps shut properly.

No. 422   Silver alarm,  verge   -   Swiss,  c1820
A rare silver cased alarm watch with a verge movement.

MOVEMENT : The verge movement is unsigned and in wonderful condition, with the gilding still bright and very few scratches.  It is running well and the alarm function is working perfectly.  The alarm is wound and set from the front and a hammer strikes the bell which is set into the back of the case.

DIAL : The large white enamel dial is about 47 mm in diameter.  It has a couple of chips around the centre (mainly hidden by the alarm hand), some scratches at 3 & 4 on the alarm dial and some hairlines running vertically around 3.  No repairs. 
Nice matching blued steel hands and three winding squares (alarm setting, alarm winding, watch winding).

CASE : The good quality, heavy gauge, consular case has engine turned decoration and is in excellent condition with no repairs.  All hinges and catches are fine.  The inside of the back cover is marked “SAS” with serial no. 6459 and chevrons (Swiss silver mark).   The inner back cover is beautifully engraved with a floral border.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge fusee movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock.  Signed and numbered “14964”.  Good original condition and running well..

DIAL : White enamel,  47.25 mm. in diameter.  It is in perfect condition.  Unusual gold hands..

INNER CASE : Silver, 52.15 mm in diameter.   Hallmarked for London, 1822, maker's mark WJ.  Good overall condition,  The hinge is fine and the case snaps shut nicely.  Good high dome crystal with no damage.   

OUTER CASE : Silver, 58.5 mm in diameter.   Matching hallmarks to the inner.  Good hinge and catch.  A heavy case in very good condition.

Loomes lists Thomas Foster in Tiverton between 1823 and 1856.
